Steelmen Cup Stalemate

Port Talbot Town 0-0 The New Saints

Manager Mark Jones continued with his Challenge Cup selection policy as Andy Boslem, Gary Bansor and Nicky Holland were all named in the starting line-up for this Semi-Final 1st Leg match against The New Saints. Captain Matthew Rees, Karl Lewis and Leigh De-Vulgt were all left out of the squad and it was Port Talbot who started the better of the two sides as the pace of Daniel Thomas and Scott Barrow caused problems for the visiting defence. Aeron Edwards was a constant problem for Port Talbot Town at the other end of the field however as he combined with striker Jamie Wood for The New Saints but neither side could create any clear chances from their possession.

Martin Rose had the best chance of the half as he found himself through on goal but his effort on goal was saved by Paul Harrison in the visitors goal. Port Talbot pressured from a series of corners as they edged the opening half but The New Saints responded after the break and began to take control of the game. Lee Kendall soon became the busier of the two goalkeepers and pulled off a fine save to tip a long range effort around the post midway through the second half.

Port Talbot soon became more involved in the match however and enjoyed a sustained period of pressure in the last 15 minutes but failed to create any clear opportunities despite their possession. Neither side could find a way to make the breakthrough as referee brought the game to a close without a booking or a sending off in what was an entertaining match despite the scoreline. Port Talbot Town manager Mark Jones was slightly happier with the result than his opposite number Andy Cale having prevented The New Saints from claiming an away goal ahead of next weeks 2nd leg match at Park Hall Stadium on Wednesday.
