Port Talbot Town Football Club are delighted to announce the additions of Ashley Roberts and Mike Rutherford to Mark Pike’s backroom staff ahead of the 2020/21 JD Cymru South season.
Ashley joins as a UEFA and FAW qualified Goalkeeping Coach whilst Mike, qualified by UEFA and due to start his FAW A License, joins as Development Manager.
These additions come as first team manager Mark Pike continues to build upon the foundations laid down in his first two years in charge at Victoria Road.
Speaking on the appointments, Pike says “Ashley is a young and bright coach who is always looking to learn and develop. Having him on board will not only help develop the current goalkeepers at the club, but he will also bring some fresh ideas.”
Upon joining the club, Ashley Roberts says “I am incredibly grateful to Pikey and the club for giving me the opportunity to get on board with a club like Port Talnbot Town FC.”
“He has a very exciting project in rebuilding the club and I am really looking forward to be a part of it,” Roberts continues. “I want to learn and develop as a coach and being part of this club will allow me to do that.”
Pike adds “Ashley will take full control of the club’s goalkeepers with immediate effect, initially with the youth, development and then first team squads. As our project developments in the coming weeks, he will take full control of the academy goalkeepers as part of his role.”
Reflecting during the off-season, Mark Pike has been very open regarding what he wants to implement as he and his staff pursue the challenges that lie ahead next season. He continues “The future can be very bright and I have a vision for what that looks like, but implementing it is the difficult part.”
“The gap between the youth and first team squads has gotten a little bit bigger since our promotion to tier two and therefore a bridge has to be developed if we are able to be a club that develops and is sustainable in every sense within the local community.”
Based on this gap, with the approval of the Port Talbot Town FC board and committee, Pike will be creating a development squad for next season.
“This is a very important element of our development program and strategy as we rebuild the future and develop future Blues,” Pike adds. “There must be a player pathway and we are hopeful that this will be hugely beneficial for both the youth and senior players.”
“Mike Rutherford will work closely with the youth and first team management team in his role as Development Manager. He comes with a wealth of experience working with younger players and we look forward to working with him and the youth management team.”
Talking on joining the backroom staff, Mike says “Firstly I would like to thank Mark and the club for giving me the opportunity to continue my development as a coach at Port Talbot Town. I will be giving 100% to ensure we meet the objectives set and look forward to supporting the rebuilding program and working with Mark, his staff and the youth setup respectively. Only together can we make this work. It is exciting and I cannot wait to get going.”
Mike will be supported with Ashley Negele, an academy coach, promoted to the Development Squad staff.
The club is delighted to welcome all three additions to the backroom staff and we wish them every success into their roles.
