Holland Goal Is All Dutch For Blues

Carmarthen Town 0-1 Port Talbot Town

Nicky Holland maintained his 100% scoring record in the Challenge Cup as he grabbed the only goal of the game just before half-time to claim Port Talbot Town’s second victory in the competition. Holland was one of six changes to the starting line-up from Saturdays match at Rhyl and, as in the Challenge Cup game against Neath, the fringe players in manager Mark Jones squad did not disappoint. Carmarthen named a number of former Port Talbot Town players in their line-up including Neil Smothers, Craig Hanford, Dyfan Pierce, captain Mark Dodds and goalkeeper Neil Thomas and edged the early exchanges. Port Talbot soon settled into the match however with a creative midfield testing the Carmarthen defence as the visitors came close with a couple of decent efforts midway through the opening half.

Martin Rose worked tirelessly upfront and should have been awarded at least one penalty from two strong appeals. Rose was the main target for Port Talbot in attack with Nicky Holland, Scott Barrow and Matthew Thompson offering support and it was Holland who would score the only goal of the game on 41 minutes when he was on hand to direct the ball into the net from close range and make amends for an earlier miss from a similar position. Lee John returned to the side in the second half as he replaced Karl Lewis and played one of his best 45 minutes since returning from Newport County as he continually caused problems for the Carmarthen defence with his pace and ability on the ball. Andy Boslem came close to doubling the lead after 60 minutes but his looping header was saved by Neil Thomas in the Carmarthen goal while Lee Surman twice found himself in the right place at the far post but could not direct the on-coming free-kicks into the back of the net as Port Talbot took control of the game.

Carmarthen did ask questions of their own in the last fifteen minutes but goalkeeper Lee Kendall was more than able to deal with the occasional ball into his area as Port Talbot maintained their single goal advantage until the final whistle to claim their second win in the competition.
