Cambrian & Clydach vs Port Talbot Town

By Craig Mapstone / October 21, 2018

Port Talbot Town’s Welsh Cup adventure came to a halt at the first time of asking for third consecutive season in the Welsh league.

In what was always set to be a tricky tie, the Steelmen travelled to the Rhondda and got things off to a promising start. Blake Morgan was put in through on goal early in to the game but a last ditch challenge in the box blocks the shot and probably an early lead for the away side.

Keane Watts got in on the action with less than 10 minutes of the game gone as well. The onrushing keeper beats him to the ball on this occasion and clears any danger. Pike rolls over his ankle chasing the ball back and is an early casualty who is immediately replaced by new signing Fripp.

With 15 minutes of the game the home side started to settle in to the game. Some nice passing and moving in the final third of the pitch resulted in a low cross driven in at the near post. Luckily for PTT Rano was able to get down early and prevent a tap in for Cambrian & Clydach.

Minutes later Cam tested again. A nice one-two from a free kick close to the Port Talbot area sees a ball lofted in to the box but unfortunately for the home side the centre forward can’t quite get a hold of the ball and the opportunity goes wasted.

Jamie Rano is called in to action again for PTT and gets out of the area to intercept a long ball towards a goal. The Cambrian midfielder picks up possession of the ball from distance and shoots with the keeper nowhere to be seen. Ryan Morgan is about for Port Talbot and clears off the line to keep the scores at 0-0.

PTT go on the counter following the next Cambrian attack. Dylan Thomas carries the ball 30 yards and shoots from on the edge of the box. His shot goes just wide of the post. Port Talbot go on the counter again minutes later in a mirrored bit of play with Keane Watts collecting the ball this time. Same result though and the shot goes just wide.

The breakthrough finally came with minutes of the half left. However, it was the home side that took full advantage. As the ball bobbled in to the six yard area Liam Reed managed to get a shot off that strikes Rano and on to the bar and slowly crosses over the line.

It could have easily been two minutes later if it wasn’t for some clever defending from Ryan Morgan. As the home side countered three against one, Morgan managed to force the play out wide and Rano saved at the near post as Cambrian went in to the half with a 1-0 lead.

PTT immediately applied the pressure from kick-off in the second half which almost saw a quick equaliser. Blake Morgan shot from the edge of the box forcing a good save and Jake Hammond heads over. Another headed effort went over from an away corner moments later.

Cambrian & Clydach doubled their lead with 10 gone in the second half. Cameron Keetch got on the score sheet for the home side when a corner wasn’t cleared. Keetch smashed the ball home from close range to double the lead for Cam.

As a penalty appeal was waved off up the other end of the pitch, Cambrian began to open up the floodgates and a third goal eventually came. Another corner wasn’t dealt with and Kyle Jones’ diving header at the back post put the home side 3 goals to the good.

Port Talbot’s defence managed to contain the brunt of further attacks as the game came to it’s conclusion before the fate of the Steelmen was finally sealed. Cameron Keetch grabbed his second of the day before substitute Richard French got in on the action straight from the restart to ensure there was no coming back from this one.

At full time the game ended 5-0 to Cambrian & Clydach in what was an emphatic result which didn’t necessarily reflect the full momentum of the game on the pitch. The Welsh Cup run ‘the 1901’ was thriving had come to an end once again with a return visit to the M & P Group ground on the horizon as PTT travel back up to the Rhondda this Saturday in league action this time.
