Druids Caught In A PT Storm

Port Talbot Town 7-0 Elements Cefn Druids

Manager Mark Jones made changes to his starting line-up as Daniel Thomas and Lee John replaced Karl Lewis and Drew Fahiya while new signing Duncan Roberts replaced unavailable goalkeeper Lee Kendall. Defensive duo Matthew Rees and Lee Surman also returned following their one match suspension although Scott Barrow missed the match through an accumulation of bookings.

Port Talbot were dominant from the start and Druids goalkeeper Chris Mullock was called into action to make a fine save from a Danny Thomas strike before tipping an effort from Martin Rose onto the post. At the other end a rare opportunity for the visitors saw Roberts make a save with his legs on 24 minutes. The opening goal arrived on 36 minutes as Danny Thomas picked the ball up wide on the left before moving into the area and driving the ball past Mullock at the near post. Three minutes later the lead had doubled as Lee John found himself in space and slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. Port Talbot kept pushing forward and on 42 minutes an effort from Gareth Phillips rebounded off the crossbar and into the path of Liam McCreesh who scored the third goal of the game from close range and added his second of the match just before half-time when he hooked the ball past Mullock from the edge of area in style.

With a commanding lead at the break Port Talbot did not stop pushing forward and just 30 seconds in the re-start Thomas scored his second of the game with another break on the left. The goal of the match handed Thomas his hat-trick on 56 minutes as Lee John and Lloyd Grist combined on the left to create Grist enough space to cross the ball into the area for Thomas to head the ball in the net for his third and his sides sixth. Port Talbot kept pushing forward with Martin Rose being denied by the post but the scoring was completed on 72 minutes when a header from Matthew Rees rebounded off the post for Lee John to score his second of the match and complete the comprehensive victory.

Druids caught in a storm in Port

A nightmare minute spell either side of half-time saw Elements Cefn Druids endure their equal heaviest defeat in the Welsh Premier League. There was no sign of what was to come in the opening 35 minutes, although Chris Mullock made two fine saves to deny Danny Thomas and Martin Rose, but, for the ten minutes before half-time and ten after Port Talbot ran riot. It was a fortuitous goal that broke the deadlock in the 36th minute as Danny Thomas’ cross-cum-shot from the left somehow crept in between Chris Mullock and his near post. That appeared to give the home side a lift, while Druids looked stunned by the manner of the goal and, three minutes later the lead was doubled when Lee John cut in to slot the ball between Mullock’s legs.

It got worse for Druids in the 42nd minute when Gareth Phillips’ shot came crashing back off the bar and into the path of Liam McCreesh, who turned the ball home from close range. Then, in the second minute of stoppage time Mullock’s punched clearance only reached McCreesh who volleyed back over the Druids keeper’s head and into the roof of the net. But it could have been a different story in the 24th minute when a good move saw the ball played out to Craig Whitfield who was able to control the ball before seeing his shot saved by Duncan Roberts’ outstretched leg.

The misery continued straight after the re-start as, just 35 seconds into the half, Thomas cut in and rounded Mullock to get the fifth for his side. Thomas came close to completing his hat-trick three minutes later as he rounded Mullock only to see his effort cleared from danger by Adam Hesp. The forward wasn’t to be denied, though, as, in the 56th minute he headed home a cross from the left for his third and Port Talbot’s sixth. Druids continued to play neat, passing football and came close to a consolation in the 62nd minute, but Whitfield’s volley was tipped behind by Roberts. It was nearly seven nil in the 69th minute when Matthew Rees’ header came back of the right hand post. But, three minutes later, Druids’ misery was confounded when Lee John turned the ball home for his side’s seventh of the night.
