2021/22 Pre Season

As a sense of normality looms upon the horizon, Port Talbot Town are already in the preparation stages ahead of the 2021/22 JD Cymru South season.

With training allowed to resume, Mark Pike and the first team squad have a number of pre-season fixtures to look forward to on top of the training schedule in readiness for league and cup preparation scheduled for the middle of July.

Pike spoke to porttalbottown.co.uk to get his thoughts ahead of the pre-season following the Welsh Government’s imposed lockdown break;

It’s been a very strange year for everyone, but it’s time to focus ahead especially given the great news of the club’s appeal of being granted our T2 licence.

It was a great feeling receiving the news our season was going to restart just a couple months back. Due to issues in previous years gone by I had little time to plan and prepare for a season ahead but this year will be my first pre season where I can fully plan and focus upon a squad.

As for our pre season games schedule, We had quite a number of pre season games lined up but with the announcement of a July 15th start we had to cancel quite a few as well unfortunately.

We have secured a number games that will provide a very good test for our current squad, while the focus will be on increasing match day fitness it will also be a great opportunity for me to look at the many talented youngsters we have by giving them the opportunities and build upon their development.

I am confident in a few breaking through the youth into the senior ranks for sure and when they get the opportunity I know they will be knocking on the door.”

Pike went on to discuss how training is currently shaping up for the first team;

We are currently in training, numbers are exceptional and the lads are buying into our pre season program.

They are very keen to start games but we have to hold them back at bit, especially given the fact that we have not kicked a ball in over 5 months with just one competitive cup game in over 16 months so we felt it’s right to get the balance of playing and avoiding any risk of lengthy injuries.

By the time we start the season I expect us to be ready, fully fit and ready for what will be a very exciting but tough season ahead. We all can’t wait to get going and hope by our first pre season game, fans will be allowed back into Sand Siro and we welcome everyone to come along and support this great club once again

Port Talbot Town’s first pre-season fixture is currently scheduled against Cymru South 2019/20 champions Swansea University and takes place on June 23rd. Under current government guidelines, supporters will not be permitted to attend any of these friendly matches and therefore games will be played behind closed doors.

Be sure to check the usual social media platforms for your match updates as well as porttalbottown.co.uk for all the breaking news which includes any fixture amendments, additions or cancellations.
